Kabaddi Debut at SEA Games

Kabaddi made its debut at the 33rd South East Asian Games (SEA Games) in Thailand. The inclusion of kabaddi as a competitive discipline in the Games showcases the growing footprint of the ancient sport in the region.

The SEA Games kabaddi competition includes three distinct formats: Standard Style Kabaddi event, Super 5 format and 3-Star Kabaddi.

While Kabaddi has long been a routine discipline at events such as the Asian Games, where India and Iran have historically been the dominant sides, its inclusion in the SEA Games signals its increasing popularity in the region.

Previous editions of the SEA Games have played a crucial role in nurturing sports like pencak silat, sepak takraw, and vovinam, allowing host nations and emerging teams to establish themselves. Kabaddi is expected to follow a similar path.
